| June 19, 2009 | | Ivedent Lloyd holds off Collins and Whitener In Powell | UDLMCS Media
As they have have for the last two years, the United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series proved to be the best way to fill the grandstands in the south. Over 3,000 race fans turned out to see the series and its lineup of heavy hitters battle for the coveted Powell Memorial trophy and the $5000 winners purse.
Fourty-one teams came to take a shot at the big prize, on a day that will remembered for the scorching heat, oppressive humidity and the unabashed emotions in the winners circle. Local favorite Ivedent Lloyd held off a serious challenge from Jacksonville's Johnny Collins, driving his new black number five race car.
Mark Whitener drove from the rear of the field to take the third spot and both Lloyd and Collins are probably lucky the race was 75 laps, and not 100.
There were 10 cautions, a couple of which involved a half dozen cars.
