Hendry County To Host 4th Annual Ponce de Leon Classic

By UDLMCS Media

The United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series will be going to the "Everglades Clay" of Hendry County Motorsports Park a little earlier than expected. Due to a series of rain-outs, especially in the last month at Volusia Speedway Park, Ken Kinney Jr. has decided to put the annual Ponce de Leon Classic back on the schedule at Hendry County.

Though VSP General Manager Tonya Moschell tried hard to get the Labor Day Shoot-Out in, two successive rain-outs left the track no viable choice for a makeup date. That's when Kinney consulted with many of the drivers and car owners in the late model ranks and supporters of the United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series.

The Ponce de Leon Classic, a very popular race in South Florida, had been taken off the schedule in early 2009 when it was apparent that the re-opening of HCMP was going to be delayed until at least summer time. "We are so excited about being able to get this race back on the schedule", Kinney early in the week. "This will be the 4th annual running of this race and the local fans really get behind it."

The 4th Annual Ponce de Leon Classic will be held on Saturday September 26th and will be the first time the UDLMCS will race on the new "Everglades Clay". The late model and sprint car drivers who have raced on the new surface have been impressed. Over 200 loads of clay from the surrounding area was brought in and though the learning curve is not complete the track has been worked in and produced some fast exciting races for the since the track opened in July.

This means there will be four races left on the UDLMCS schedule, two of them at Hendry County Motorsports Park plus the Ocala date and the return to Volusia Speedway Park.
